This is an hour long presentation, titled, "Complex Trauma and its Effects on Child Development." After presenting Grand Rounds at the New York University Medical Center on "Complex Trauma and its Effects on Child Development," Dr. Becker-Weidman was interviewed by Judith Joseph, MD, MBA, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at the Child Study Center in New York City. In this five minute interview Dr. Becker-Weidman explains how chronic early maltreatment affects child development.

Attachment Disorder: Diagnosis and Treatment. This video is presented by the Association for the Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children. Sensitive caregiving during early childhood builds a healthy foundation for future development. Attachment disorder may be triggered during a child's earliest years when a healthy foundation for trust and attachment is interrupted by abuse and/or neglect, abandonment, separation from birth parents and other factors. When this foundation is damaged, children may have difficulty in forming loving, intimate relationships.

Attachment-Focused Therapy - This video is presented by the Association for the Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children. Attachment-focused therapy is focused on improving the relationship between the child and the caregiver so that the child can feel safe in the relationship and begin to trust the parent. Once the relationship is built and the child begins to heal, the negative behaviors associated with attachment issues will begin to improve.

Graduate Certificate in Attachment-Focused Family Therapy  - Dr. Arthur Becker-Weidman. This 6-Day course will be divided into 2 sessions within 6 months. (3-days each sessions) will lead to certification as Attachment-Focused Family Therapist. This course involves a combination of dyadic lectures and power point presentations, role-playing and demonstrations to facilitate skill acquisition, and reviews of DVDs to illustrate important concepts and principles of treatment. Most clients have experienced trauma and disorders of attachment. This certification program enables staff to effectively use an evidence-based, effective, an empirically validated treatment approach in their work, resulting in greater likelihood of client improvement and reduced use of services later by clients who are healthier and more productive members of society.

Adoption and Addiction: Remembered Not Recalled.  - Presented by Paul Sunderland who is an addiction counselor with over 25 years of experience. This video touches on relinquishment and adoption issues that are very informative for mental health professionals and adoption triad members as it is important to understand what adopted individuals have been through.

This video describes the experiences of babies missing their first mother, the impact on the baby’s brain chemistry and the long-term effects experienced by adoptees as adults. Mr. Sunderland goes on to speak about relinquishment trauma which is a developmental trauma that is experienced by individuals due to a separation from their first mother.

John Bowlby - Attachment Theory and Psychotherapy   In the world of psychotherapy, John Bowlby was — and to some extent still is — an ambiguous figure. Trained as a psychoanalyst, and with a powerful academic mind, he was keen to place his discipline on a firm scientific footing.

Presenter Professor Jeremy Holmes shall describe this history, and then outline where he sees the role of attachment in contemporary psychotherapeutic thinking. He addresses the themes of mentalising, the epistemic trust and the neurobiological underpinnings of the therapeutic relationship. He will conclude with some guidelines for the practice of attachment-informed psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Sprouts: The Attachment Theory: How Childhood Affects Life. The attachment theory argues that a strong emotional and physical bond to one primary caregiver in our first years of life is critical to our development. If our bonding is strong and we are securely attached, then we feel safe to explore the world. If our bond is weak, we feel insecurely attached. We are afraid to leave or explore a rather scary-looking world. Because we are not sure if we can return. Often we then don't understand our own feelings.
